Assisting clients, taking payments, scheduling appointments, answering phones and working in the reception area are just some of the daily tasks that veterinary assistants are responsible for. While these do not sound very exciting or rewarding at all, luckily, they are the more tedious and repetitive tasks in this profession. Although the list comes out to be very unappealing, the major plus is that employees get a firsthand look at the animals coming in and have the potential to spend some time with them while they are waiting for their future clients to fill out paperwork which can be extremely rewarding and can potentially create an instant bond between the veterinary assistant and the animal. At the same time, there are going to be many instances when animals come in severely injured and bloodied to the point where it is gruesome to see and emotionally disturbing but that is part of the job and individuals must find a way to deal with it as best possible.
Helping sterilize equipment, restraining animals during exams, feeding and caring for animals, shaving them before surgeries, cleaning exam rooms and surgical areas along with assisting veterinary technicians are all some of the more important duties that veterinary assistants are responsible for. Having to perform all of these tasks it is hard to see how a vet tech salary is much more impressive than a veterinary assistant salary, but when putting everything into consideration every position that has to do with veterinary work is quite lackluster and unimpressive. For those individuals that are working in locations where there is a boarding kennel, they will often be given the responsibility to do the feeding and walking of dogs as well as cleaning the kennels. All in all, while being a veterinary assistant might not be the most lucrative career in the world, having a great love for animals can lead to having an amazing experience with the satisfaction and reward of saving innocent lives on a daily basis.
